you may be right despite of the solution you found later.  although
color is set to ALWAYS/ON, a fresh lynx always resets it to NEVER.

but it is propably not the ./configure:

grep color Readme # grep private log of configuration process

--enable-charset-choice --enable-color-style --enable-default-colors
--enable-charset-choice --enable-color-style --enable-default-colors

checking if html source should be colorized... yes
checking if curses supports color attributes... yes

this is dev9 on freebsd with ncurses.
