Try  /test/quickbrown.html  file from lynx source distribution
to set your display character set properly.
(better: add a sample sentence in your lagnuage there)

What is the display charset in Borland and in Cygwin lynx versions?

I recall something similar when running djgpp' compiled lynx version
on MSWindows9x as a DOS console application.
