It's not your fault. At the beggining most thing could be done only by the
GUI. That has changed slowly since the server and minibuffer were
introduced.
And IMO some functions should be implemented for 1.0 (open file, insert
label). The trick is easy, if an argument is provided just process the
request, otherwise use the GUI.
