less than page-width floats?

Some time pack, someone (lars?) produced an example file for the 
picinpar environment.  I've finally figured out how this works, I 
think.  The result would appear to be that all of the text and the 
picture must appear together on the same page.  Also that there must be 
enough text to stay alonside the picture, or the next line superimposes 
upon hte rest of the figure.

Is there a way to simply have floats on the side of the page, and have 
them leave the rest of the width for text?
