hmm.  I managed to install 1.1 source, I think.  I figured out to run 
autoconf to get configure (though the instructions seem to imply that 
this somehow happens automatically).

configure works (or so it claims, but:

Configuration of LyX was successful.  
Type 'make' to compile the program, 
and then 'make install' to install it.
smithttyp2:lyx>make
make: *** No targets.  Stop.
