Hello,

There is currently no support for \caption optional argument (the same
holds for sections, unfortunately). This will very likely appear in
LyX 1.2, since the current kernel rewrite will make that possible.

In the meantime, you can enter in a normal paragraph

\caption[foo]{bar}

where \caption and the brackets are marked as TeX. It is highly
suboptimal, but it works.
