With tetex-.9 you can modify texmf.cnf (I think that's what it's called)
to specify local and home directories to search, and tell it what order
to search in. texhash works on all of the specified directories that you
have access to.
I move the tex directory to ..texmf/tex so that the ls-R is smaller.
e.g. /usr/local/share/lyx/texmf/tex and /home/garst/.lyx/texmf/tex
I don't know what version of LyX came with RH6.0,  but the current
version is
1.0.2pre3 and IIRC there were some updates to revtex recently.
