more space oddities

I have *no* idea why I never noticed this before. Double-click a word 
to select, and begin typing its replacement.  The trailing space is 
lost, running the new word into the next word.

The various versions of insets/markers would all solve this, I think, 
as long as we're certain that they're invoked in a text substitution.
