I don't know if /usr/local is a more widespread convention or not.

Well, all(?) GNU packages come with /usr/local as default root.

Mate> (BTWY, I'd add `./configure --src' to Kayvan's rpm to configure lyx
   Mate> for the local system).

Hmmm... I've never had a problem with LyX without doing this step. Is
   it necessary?

Absolutely. Move your TeX to a starnge place *after* building LyX,
and you see what I mean. The developers will be able to say more.

I'll be happy to fix the RPM to add in the TEXMF/TEXMFLOCAL stuff for
the correct installation of the class files.

Well, again,

kpsewhich --expand-var '$TEXMFLOCAL'

might not work with other TeX distributions.

However, I don't want to step on your toes if you want to maintain the
   RPM stuff.

Not at all. Just go ahead, and do it. The only thing is to let us
know in advance when you are on vacation so that someody else can make
newer releases while you are gone.

But as I said, I am very much in favor not moving the .cls files.
Also: please look at my spec file to see how to configure LyX on the
local system.

I also think that a README is useful for less experienced RH users.
