Michal, this is simply great! I am relieved to hear that the bug is
actually in egcs, somehow ;) 

What worries me now is that we have a lot of uses of memcpy() in the
source. I guess however that not all these versions suffer from the
same problem, so maybe a simple rewording of the existing code would
not trigger the bug. I'll try to get access to a faulty system here
and see how it is possible to cure the problem.

PS: do you know whether this bug has been reported/discussed on the
egcs list? I am interested in particular on the details of when it
happens, to try to work around it.
