I've certainly observed something similar using Redhat 5/6 & lyx 1.02/1.03
but I assumed that this was a colourmap problem on the computers I've been
using.  Also, sometimes the rendering isn't displayed at all - it just
stays on the bounding box with 'rendering image' being displayed for hours
at a time.  Again, I cant see a reproducable pattern here.

PS: the files are stored on a nfs connection which is sometimes a bit
slow, if that might have anything to do with them not showing up...
