Don't run off and reinvent the wheel.  LyX is evolving in approximately
that direction although we will almost certainly have two modes of
editting.  The well supported LaTeX mode we have now and a generalised
version of the SGML Docbook support.  The Docbook side of things isn't so
well supported at present since Jose' is the only one working on that.
I'm sure he'd welcome your assistance.

It will probably be some time before we get a generalised XML/SGML
editting mode as there are a number of issues related to document
hierarchy and syntax that we are working through as our support for
Docbook improves -- changes/extensions of .layout information.  The
changes required for better Docbook support also benefit the LaTeX
support.

Once Docbook is well supported we can then generalise ie. walk before we
can run.
