As Allan said there are already several steps in that direction in the docbook
support. There are several abstractions that would allow to make another backend
really easy. One example, if anyone has the time or the energy to do it is a
native html backend...

Something that I'm waiting for are better insets, more generalized, because that's
something that docbook support needs, because eventually everything there is
an inset.
I think that we also need a way to change a document from latex to docbook and
convert the document structure from one to the other, and vice versa. That
mechanism doesn't exist now.
