In Layout->LaTeX_Preamble, add
\newcommand{\ds}{\displaystyle}
and then use \ds in your file.

It is very difficult to find an scheme that works everytime...

There has been work in this area recently. And I think we'll have to
think again about what/how lyxrc files are read.
