In this case, you need to ``gunzip -c < lyx-1.1.4fix1.gz | patch -p0'' since
the patch is gzipped.
If you're running Redhat Linux, you can also just install my RPM from
ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx
The 1.1.4fix1 RPM includes that set of patches.
