IIRC some versions of gcc 4.1 exhibit this behaviour with precompiled
headers.

I think so. I hesitated to do this, because these strings should be
internal. If I had a good solution I'd applied it a long time ago, but I
think this is the best one.
BTW, you need to put the strings out of the anon namespace in unicode.C.
