And some day LyX's behaviour does not just depend on the position of the
cursor and the direction it was coming from, but from the phase of the
moon as well ;-)

Are you serious? Dekel's approach sounds *much* cleaner and if you don't
render the red dots there should be no visible change at all.

Insets are done this way, too. So it can't be pure evil. We could have
text iterators of various kinds, one that touches only 'real' chars, one
that traverses everything. So even for the 'user' of text(.C) the actual
implementation could be made fairly transparent.
