It might be a good idea to clean it up in order to understand what
is going on. Then you have a better fundation for the rewrite --
in a dual sense: You want to do the good things from the existing
implementation, and you want to avoid doing the bad things.

It's not stupid to clean it up before you replace it, because you
learn in the process.
