Hm, I missed this and did something similar. Bo's patch is generally
better, but lacks changeRefsIfUnique.

This string params encoding/decoding is really horrible (not your
fault, nothing we can change now).
There it is again. Whaddaya say we clean this up early in the 1.6.x
development process? Or maybe even on the way to 1.5.1?
