On the 'LyX Wanted Features list' (http://www.devel.lyx.org/tasks.php3) I
saw the proposal to implement support for multiple indexes (with the
'multind' package).

I think a better suggestion is to use the 'index' package instead. Apart
from supporting multiple indexes as well, this package also makes the \index
command more robust. This has one important effect:
An index entry like `�berma�' is written as is to the .idx file
instead of being expanded to `\"Uberma\IeC {\ss }'. The advantage is that an
index processing program can sort the first one much easier than the latter
(unfortunately, makeindex can sort neither properly).

Another interesting feature for LyX would be the support of sub-items in
index entries and explicit sort keys. Maybe LyX can even automatically
compute the sort key from the entry, e.g. �berma� -> Uebermass (or
Ubermass), so the sorting problem would be solved.

Just some ideas...
