All I can say is that it has been introduced by John here: http://www.lyx.org/trac/changeset/3064 The changeset does not help me to understand the code... The corresponding mailing list thread does not help much either. http://marc.info/?t=102748081000010&r=1&w=2 I remember we used to have cases when \0 was output to the LaTeX file, which caused problems with some TeX implementations. I do not know whether this still happens. I'd say it was a mistake. JMarc
