I'm sure you'll all be happy to hear that it took me only a few hours to
upgrade my thesis style file to a class file, and even getting rid of a
couple bugs in the style file in the process. I'm back in thesis-writing
business again.
If I get the time, I might make a ucthesis layout for LyX. ucthesis seems to
be the layout that most other thesis layouts steal from, so anyone wanting
to make a new class/layout could steal from it and change just a few things.
If anyone's interested in doing this, by the way, and is rightly thinking
that I might not get to it any time soon, I can send you my Penn thesis
layout file. I think you wouldn't have to change very much. I know several
people have written their theses with LyX, and I'll bet many more people
would like to use it instead of LaTeX.
Because I haven't made a feature request in probably a week, I'll ask again
what the prospects are for handling optional arguments to commands.
Specifically, the sectioning commands. I first noticed this problem almost
three years ago: optional arguments to sectioning commands are one of the
ways that reLyX destroys data, which is Bad. Now I'm noticing it as a
problem with \caption, too. My figures and tables have pretty long
descriptions, which is fine, but it looks ugly in the listoffigures and
listoftables.
Because it would be unfair to make a feature request without submitting a
bug report, I'll notice a minibug that I notice, with the usual apologies if
it's already been fixed: when I type something into the "Extra Options"
field in Layout->Document, the buttons remain grayed out. I have to change
one of the comboboxes or radio buttons before they get black.
The feature where an illegal length in, for example, Left Margin (in the
Paper section in the Layout->Document popup) grays out the Apply/OK buttons
is neat. However, if I open the popup. type something, and then delete it,
all four buttons are activated, when in fact I haven't changed anything.
I guess this might be hard to keep track of?
