btw what distro you use? isn't possible there is more automake-xx versions
installed on your system?

I probably can manage to get it back up running. However, it's annoying
to update things, find workarounds, while I absolutely don't see any
advantage at all.
I remember from when I wanted to start to participate in LyX that I was
turned down because it seemed that you could only compile LyX on Windows
with mingw back then, and this didn't work. Then I tried one linux
machine, but I didn't have the right version of autotools, then another
one, which didn't have the right gcc and so forth. Then a year later I
wanted to try again, but suddenly Qt4 was required. Then, locally
installing qt an compiling it, it still didn't work because LyX forgot
to bump the gcc requirement which gave me errors I couldn't understand.
Luckily, in the end, it was possible to compile on Windows without the
hassle of cygwin/mingw.
Anyway, I'd prefer not to bump the requirements without a necessity or
clear reason. It only might turn off users/possible developers and so
forth. As I'm not a Linux guy at all, I really don't care how the
tarballs are compressed, and if it's only needed for Pavel and Juergen,
I prefer not to bump it.
However, It's up to you. I can work around it personally..
