Thanks very much for the fast reply and suggestions. Because this problem occurs only with LyX and not elsewhere, I wonder whether LyX somehow misinterprets my settings. It *used* to work properly, but in the middle of editing a document the key mapping suddenly changed. I did nothing prior to that point to change the settings. One moment it worked, the next it did not. I have restarted the computer, reinstalled LyX, tried editing a different file; none of these worked. I *can* remote login to another machine (XP pro), open the same .LyX file from Dropbox, and type from this keyboard, and it works fine. So I agree that it has to do with *this* computer, but only also with LyX.
Apparently at least one other person had this problem, but his solution does not seem relevant to me: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg54332.html . I'm contacting our IT people who installed both the OS and LyX to see if they can suggest anything from the Win7 point of view. Is there somewhere in LyX files or preferences where I can look or a diagnostic that I can do that might assess keyboard function and house the source of the problem?
