For your question in the preamble, yes it looks suspicious but is
necessary. XeTeX will run into problems for ctex without
\DeclareRobustCommand\nobreakspace{\leavevmode\nobreak\ }; the author
of ctex believes this is an issue with xunicode, and has provided this
solution.
