Why not the other way round: enhance Document>Settings>Branches with a
"render as ..." column. Or allow a wider choice for "Activated":

  Normal
  Footnote
  Margin Note
  Grey
  Box

I suggest to replace the current "Notes" inset with a pre-defined branch
called "Notes".
