I thought, perhaps mistakenly, that grep didn't do ".*" matching except in
GNU form.  Anyway as I said I didn't write this but figured someone, maybe
Lars, had a reason for using `grep -E` in the first place.

Just change it then and if someone screams we'll know better next time ;-)
