If you have no previous experience with Latex, writing a new class form
scratch is a rather difficult task. You may want to explore an alternative
path: customize an existing class to your need. I would recommend you take
a look at the class memoir and especially at its very extensive manual.
Memoir was designed with customization in mind and can be tailored to cover
many different uses from academic book to commercial or art books and so
forth. It may be all you need. At worst, you will learn quote a bit on how
a Latex class works.
