Thanks for the explanation. Perhaps the lag I notice now is a
consequence of more complex diagrams (three dimensional figures rather
than two). Instant preview produces figures of lesser quality than
exporting to postscript and then converting to png or pdf, but while
working on the drawing that might be worth trying.
