Are you kidding? This is the same issue raised at #9371.
Please, apply to branch the patch I posted there:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/raw-attachment/ticket/9371/9371-21x.diff
and you will see that there is no problem in previewing.

In principle, I would agree if there is a problem that cannot be (easily)
solved otherwise, but still I have to see this problem. I prefer having
good quality previews in a short time. They are previews, so the way
they are obtained is irrelevant. You want bad previews produced in a much
longer time for ... what? To follow the principle that the previews should
be obtained by running the same default latex engine set in the preferences?

No, please. There are already too much options. An acceptable compromise
would be using the old way for selecting the latex engine if the document
does not specify a default output format (disregarding the default output
format set in the preferences).
