I don't know the details of the current handling of master/child
conflicts, but

* the "use-non-TeX fonts" setting should be the same in master and child.

  While, in principle, it is possible to use 8-bit fonts and Unicode fonts
  in one document, this is 
    - a very rare use case
    - very complicated to get right
  and does not need native LyX support. 
  (It should stay achievable by a combination of ERT, user-preamble and
  expert settings.)

* conflicts should be handled like other conflicting document settings, e.g.,
  different document classes.
