Does LyX still compile with just 512 MB? I mean, taking under an hour or
so? I really don't have any recent evidence... 

Seriously, I think people should keep in mind that other people need to
compile LyX on older hardware from time to time and having files with 4000
lines that expand into 40000 line translation units does not really help.
