Note that you can use a magnifier like kmag2 (I did not find a gnome
equivalent yet) to see these things better.
One consequence of this commit is that we may use sub-pixel aliasing.
Could it be what you see ?
I don't think so, since the monitors and video cards are so different in
these two cases.
Indeed your screen shot only uses grayscale antialiasing.
