The dashes thing comes from LaTeX ligatures tradition.

I think I was on the 'don't do this side' back when we had that discussion. But since we do do it, I was thinking about other cases where it might be worthwhile.

Actually, I was getting ready to do a presentation to our graduate students about LyX ("LaTeX Without Tears") and was thinking about what quirks I should point out. The dash thing was one, and elipses, and then I thought, "Why this difference?" The history of course I remember.

LibreOffice seems to leverage the auto-correct framework for this purpose, which also makes things configurable. I agree with JMarc that if we did anything like this, we should do it generally, and not just special-case stuff.

So definitely not for 2.4.0, if ever.
