Good night,

while translating the Preferences dialog, I stumbled upon the backup feature
and realized it does not work exactly as described in both, its checkbox'
tooltip and the (new) section 2.2.1 of the User's Guide manual.

Follow these steps to reproduce the behaviour
  1. Run Lyx.
  2. Set the folder backups will be stored in: Tools > Preferences > Paths >
Backup Directory.
  3. Enable the backup feature in Tools > Preferences > Look and Feel >
Document Handling > Backup original documents when saving.
  4. Open the backup folder and enable "show hidden files" in your file browser.

Now that the backup feature is enabled and functional, let's test it with a
brand new document.

  5. In Lyx, create a new file; then type "A" and save it.

No file appears in the backup folder.

  6. Now append "B" to the file and save it again.

A file appears in the backup folder, but not with the name it should (path of
original file with "/" replaced for "!").

  7. Append "C" to the file and save it once again.

Another file shows in the backup folder, now with the name expected (path of
original file with "/" replaced for "!").

  8. Finally, append "D" to the file and save it.

If you now open in LyX both backup files
  1. The "correct" (the one with "!" in its name), shows the text "ABC": the
penultimate saved version of the document, as described in the User's Guide
section 2.2.1.
  2. The "incorrect" (the one with no "!" in its name), shows just "A": the
first saved version of the document.

So, by enabling the backup feature we end up with an extra backup file, which
is absolutely useless and will never be deleted unless done manually.
