I have not tested yet whether this solves all Japanese (or even the Chinese) tests, but it might be worthwhile to recheck with polyglossia master. Note that the actual output of Japanese and Chinese texts with polyglossia is still unusable due to the missing linebreak handling (https://github.com/reutenauer/polyglossia/issues/635), but it should at least produce something without error now.
