sorry for annoying about the ert inset again, but it seems that the future
of ERT is very important to the users. seems that users often have to use
ERT for *very* small TeX fragments like "\/". I do. so what about this
variant: 

ERTinsets could most of the time be open, and would have no label in this
state (like the insets contained in tabulars). Of course, obviously it must
not take the whole line in that state. Close it, if desired, with RMB (gets
a label then).  
I also like the "label shows content" variant, 
just my 2 cents
