Ok, we currently have step 1, adding '3' is possible, but one has to remove
the braces manually which is clumsy.. hm. maybe automatic removal is ok
then.
OTOH, we could have "invisible" empty bases that only appear as {} in LaTeX
output, or we could have some special mark (maybe some thin blue line).
The problem with the {} is, that this is _two_ items, which makes
navigation a bit awkward...
