A partial support is still better than no support at all.
Suppose that you have
\begin{align*}
a & = b\\
& = c\\
\intertext{This is a long sentence.......}
& = d
\end{align*}
With basic \intertext support you will see on screen
---------------|
a = b |
= c |
This is a long |sentence.....
= d | ^^^ this is outside the lyx screen.
---------------+
while with no \intertext support you will get
---------------|
| a = b
| = c
\intertext{This is a long sentence.......} = d
---------------+
namely almost everything is outside the screen.
