ok, I see. Another special case.

you can handle *.gz files by latex if you have a corresponding
*.gz.bb which has as contents only the bounding box. This
configuration is the default for latex and saved in

texmf/tex/latex/config/graphics.cfg

So we have the problem what to do, when a zipped eps file
is read: converted by lyx or untouched to latex ...
Hm, have to think about it ....
