JPEG is unsuitable for typeset material.  PNM leads to large file
sizes.  I would think that GhostScript's tiffpack device would
probably be the thing to use.

Except that for some reason or other, my Ghostscript generates just
junk when I use it.  At least the usual programs using libtiff do not
seem comfortable with it.
