Indeed. That's "math text mode" nowadays unless you specifally converted
"$6x3$" which should give the 1.2.1 result. 

Note that you can convert "math text mode" to "real math mode" by 'M-m t i'
or selecting Edit->Math->ChangeFormulaType->inline at any time.

Yes, this way you've created a "real math mode box" in a "math text mode
box".

You haven't. Either start with the proper mode by wrapping the stuff to be
converted in $...$ or mutate the formula afterwards by M-m t i.
