I've been using gbib to do this and it works pretty well.. and you don't need to be running Gnome to use this.. I'm using it with KDE3 and it works great.. I had used tkbibtex for a while but found gbib easier to work with.. it can insert bibtex databases and references directly into LyX using the pipe..
