In case you're on a unix: This thing only matches some elusive XFree problems. 
I have had that kind of behaviour 2 (two) times only with things completely 
unrelated to LyX. If a reboot heals it -- don't reboot. Just hit 
ctrl-alt-backspace, or ssh in from a different computer and do # killall X

It is not really necessary to reboot recent open-source linux systems unless 
you're doing something weird (<rant>like running afs</rant>) ;-)))
