Good afternoon, Jean-Marc.

I don't think this is a hack. LyX uses the info output by 
$col->{"pwidth"} to ascertain how wide the column should be on the 
screen. IFF the $col->{"special"} is empty, this info will be output 
to LaTeX as a column specifier p{2cm} f.ex.. However, I explicitly 
fill the $col->{"special"} field so that the LaTeX output is m{2cm}. 
In this case, $col->{"pwidth"} is used simply to control the visual 
appearence on the LyX screen.

AFAICS, it's an identical concept to activating column borders using 
the check buttons in the tabular dialog but then also specifing the 
special field as '|||c|||'.
