Have you tried the patch?  It looks the same as before.

With the patch it's just a displayed inset that draws a fat red line
across the screen. Without the patch it is  some paragraph property
that's displayed as a fat red line across the screen.

But the inset works 'automatically' whereas the paragraph property
requires extra code not just for drawing but to handle it when
splitting and mergeing paragraphs as well.


Please show me the example of paragraph layouts with pagebreaks you
were refering to. My grepping turns out (more or less) empty:
