Although there are a lot of things I like about LyX (and in fact, I'm
planning to use it for my thesis), there is one feature I would really
like: self-contained documents.

What I mean by that is that as things stand now, a document's final
appearance depends on the various LaTeX packages installed and the
default LyX layout files. So there is no gurantee that a document
will look the same if I mail it to someone, or, more worringly, if I
look at the document a decade later (or even a few years later).

The LaTeX 'snapshot' package can be used in conjunction with some
other scripts to get all the LaTeX dependencies. Similar scripts
could be written to determine LyX layout file dependencies. But doing
is this way is inconvenient.

It would be great if LyX was able to encapsulate all the dependencies
in a single file. I realise this is probably a fairly complex
undertaking... I was just wondering if it was on the TODO list at all.

To summarize: it would be great if LyX could gurantee that the documents
would look the same years or decades later.

Thanks for a great piece of software,
