2. The DefaultIcon is stored at lyx.exe,0. Is it? Will it "just work", or do I need to do something else.
That should just work, if there is an icon resource in the .exe file. You can use reshacker to put one in, if there is none:

Is anyone any good at manipulating images? I have 16x16 and 48x48 pixel versions of the LyX monster. Attached.
I also have been looking at the gsview icons. Attached are their monster and their associated document image. I wonder if someone could create an analogous 32x32 pixel lyx document image?
The plan would be to associate the "lyx doc" image with files with a .lyx extension and the "lyx monster" image with the lyx executable and any shortcuts to it.
I'd guess that would go a long way to making us appear "professional".
