I think I'll leave it at what it has. None of the above are "critical" to
LyX's operation and all can be added at a later date and thereafter will
"just work".

Don't you think that six extra pages before you try and install LyX itself

Thanks for trying it out. Thanks also for providing the template code,
although it's changed rather a lot since then. No extraneaous global
variables at all...

Why isn't there one written in python that uses python as its interface
language. This weird macro shit is, well, shit. And I took half an hour
with pen and paper trying to work out how to manipulate the stack
correctly so that I could call functions without declaring a bunch of
global variables.
