Yet more on the installation issues. Brian Linfoot experienced some of the same installation issues I had, on both XP and 2K in his case, but it's not clear whether he had the same drag-and-drop problems before pre5 came out. (In any case, they seem to be fixed.) He had some other issues we're trying to sort out.

In particular, instant preview did not work initially for Brian, although it now does. I just did another pre5 install on XP, keeping my existing preferences. Once again the configuration script failed but the installer went ahead and started LyX, and once again LyX picked up my preferences correctly and could create/load/edit documents but could not display them. I discovered this time that LyX did create a .tex file in the correct temp directory (plus a dependency file), but apparently never ran LaTeX.

I normally don't use instant preview, but I turned it on while LyX was running (after it failed to display a document). Then I created a new document with a single math inset. IP worked for me, which among other things means that LyX managed to run LaTeX to generate the DVI file with the formula image, even though View->DraftDVI failed to run LaTeX against the document containing the image.

As usual, everything worked fine after a restart. I shall now stop replying to myself for a while.
